OUR TRIBAL GOVERNMENT

The Tribal nations have a government-to government relationship with the United States. The Tribes of the Great Sioux Nation signed treaties with the United States in 1824, 1851, 1865, and 1868, which are legal documents that established our boundaries and recognized our rights as sovereign governmental entities.

The Lower Brule Sioux Tribe operates under a constitution and a federal corporate charter consistent with the Indian Reorganization Act of June 18, 1934. The Tribal Council governs the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe. The Tribal Council consists of a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, a Secretary/Treasurer, and three additional Council people all of whom are elected by the tribal membership. The Tribal Council Chairman serves as the administrative head of the tribe. The Tribal Chairman, Officers, and Council serve a term of two years and can be elected for consecutive terms without limit.
