Buffalo Interpretive Center
The Lower Brule Buffalo Interpretive Center teaches the story of the buffalo, its importance and significance in the North American Indian cultures of the Great Plains, and its relationship to the people of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe.
The Center is located one of the tribal bison ranges on original Lower Brule Sioux Reservation lands. More than 100 buffalo roam freely through the hills, plains and draws of this native shortgrass prairie. Hands-on exhibits, interpretive videos, special programs and tours of the buffalo pasture offer visitors a unique educational experience that enhances cultural understanding. The gift shop offers a wide selection of products of native artisans. Demonstrations of traditional Lakota arts and crafts techniques take place periodically. The Center is just 7 miles SE of Ft. Pierre on the Native American Scenic Byway (Hwy 1806) - the beautiful and dramatic alternative route for travelers to Pierre and beyond from Interstate 90 East!
Open weekdays, year-round, weather permitting. Please call the Center at 605-223-2260 or 888-323-2260 for current hours of operation. Groups are requested to call ahead to arrange arrival time. For additional information on recreational opportunities on the Lower Brule Sioux Reservation, please contact: the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, Tourism Office, 187 Oyate Circle, Lower Brule, South Dakota 57548 or call 605-473-0561.
